Empathetic and Aggressive Bristol Family Attorney

Families have problems. Some families need the assistance of an attorney to resolve their conflicts; others just need space to cool off. When you turn to Margaret M. Hayes, we help your family resolve all their family law matters.

Our empathetic and caring side comes through when we are meeting with clients. We take the time to understand all their concerns and their goals for the legal process. If we feel family law mediation is right for you, then we will recommend it. However, if we feel that taking your case to court is more appropriate, then we will serve as a zealous advocate on your behalf. We fight aggressively to protect your rights. Contact us online or call 860-589-4121 to schedule your confidential consultation.

Resolving Divorce Related Matters

  • Legal separation: Although we can help clients obtain a legal separation, we often advise against it. A legal separation costs about the same as a divorce, but there is no actual divorce at the end. We help clients find a solution that makes sense for their situation.
  • Same-sex divorce: Since same-sex marriage was legalized a year ago, we anticipate a rise in couples who may need assistance in the divorce process. We offer clients the legal counsel they need in same-sex divorce and the separation of civil unions.
  • Child custody and visitation: We help parents create schedules for parenting time. If your situation has changed since the original arrangement was made, we can help with child custody modification.
  • Alimony: In Connecticut, there is no set formula for determining alimony (also called spousal support). We advocate on behalf of our clients, helping make sure their rights are protected and they receive what they are entitled to.
  • Child support: Child support is a formula-based amount. Although it is a cut and dry area of law, the numbers must be input correctly to achieve an accurate result.
  • Division of marital assets: We work with clients to valuate and divide marital assets and debt. Working with a lawyer can help ensure all assets are properly identified.

Non-Divorce Family Law Matters

  • Domestic violence: We work with clients to implement and enforce protection and restraining orders.
  • Paternity: We work with parents to help identify a child's father. We work with mothers who are seeking child support from nonresponsive men. We also assist fathers who are being denied access to their child.
  • Juvenile law: We represent clients in juvenile court for matters of child protection, abuse and neglect. We also work with parents in custody and guardianship matters.
